Exclusive Track Premiere: Witherfall, “Nobody Sleeps Here…”
Progressive metal is a tricky beast; so many bands attempt it, and so many get it so, so wrong.
Thankfully Los Angeles metal outfit Witherfall are not one of those bands, having figured out how to do seemingly everything right. Consisting of guitarist Jake Dreyer (Iced Earth, Kobra And The Lotus, White Wizzard), singer Joseph Michael (White Wizzard) and the late Adam Sagan (Circle II Circle, Into Eternity) — who passed away on December 7th, 2016 during the album’s final phase of production — Witherfall have everything going for them: superb chops, a keen sense for melody, an excellent grasp on songwriting and the ability to tie all that together into a package that sounds like wholly their own. Iced Earth are probably the closest touchstone here as far as other bands Witherfall’s members are involved in, but there are also touches of Nevermore, Dream Theater and Opeth in their music. You get the idea.
Here’s a quote from Dreyer and Michael about “Nobody Sleeps Here…,” which we’re premiering on MetalSucks today:
“‘Nobody Sleeps Here…’ is the most ambitious song on Nocturnes and Requiems. The song takes the listener on a dark journey about anxiety and dread akin to Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Tell-Tale Heart,’ the idea being to cause them to experience a broad range of emotions while listening. From complex counterpoint instrumental sections to vocal lines that defy gravity, some of the best performances on the record were executed within the measures of this song.”
Nocturnes and Requiems comes out on February 10th; pre-order here. Check out another song from the record called “End of Time.”
