Informal Poll: Who Would YOU Have Nominated for the “Best Metal Performance” Grammy?
Metalheads get very, very angry about the Grammy nominations every year.
On one hand, I get it: the people who choose the nominees are mostly old and out of touch, and the bands they choose are often dinosaurs with little relevance to what’s going on in metal right now. There are up-and-coming bands that are pushing new boundaries who are way more deserving of the attention, and the Grammy nods always feel at least a few years behind the times. But on the other hand… who give a fuck? Awards are so arbitrary, and it’s clear that a ceremony that airs on national television is going to favor more mainstream/older/well-known bands. You know what’s really going in metal today, I know what’s going on in metal today, and so do millions of other dedicated metalheads… so what does it matter if an awards body that typically has nothing to do with metal recognizes that or not? At the very least, metal is getting something of a platform on a wider, national stage.
Anyway, the nominees for the 2017 “Best Metal Performance” Grammy were released yesterday: Baroness, Gojira, Korn, Megadeth and Periphery all got nods. At least there’s some RELATIVELY new blood in there this year, right? But nope, people be stangry.
So: you tell us who you think is more deserving. Our MS staff “Best of 2016” lists have started rolling out, so perhaps you can take inspiration from those. Did Vektor write the best jam of the year? Cult of Luna? Avatar? Khemmis? Wormrot? The Dillinger Escape Plan? You tell us! Sound off in the comments below.
The Grammys will air on February 12, 2017, by the way… not that the metal portion is ever televised.
