Soil’s Ryan McCombs Still Thinks Trump is Better Than Hillary, is Wrong
Donald Trump has already gone back on his campaign promises to “drain the swamp” of Washington insiders and rid the federal government of self-interested corruption by appointing major business leaders and established politicians to posts on his staff. Worse, some of those choices are absolutely horrible people who have vowed to roll back decades of progress on women’s rights, are supported by stated white supremacists and have gone on record as saying they hate Jews.
But who cares about shit like that when at least we avoided having a white house occupied by Hillary Clinton, a politician with an admittedly flawed record and limited appeal that at least has some care and compassion for other humans? Certainly not Soil frontman Ryan McCombs, who probably hasn’t been bothered to look into any of this stuff one bit!
So here’s what McCombs said when talking with Metal Wani’s Carl O’Rourke before Soil’s recent concert in Bristol, England:
When I first came over [to Europe] well before the election — a couple of weeks before the election — I was surprised to hear the opinions that I was hearing, because it was just so anti-Trump.
Shocker of all shockers — touring musician learns that people in the rest of the civilized world think Americans are fucking idiots!
McCombs goes on:
I think what a lot of people need to sit back and look at was that Donald Trump was… I’m not a Trump supporter — I don’t think he’s the greatest [candidate for a president] at all. I think when you’re left with him or ‘Killary’ [sic], you have to go with… I would have voted for Satan over her. I have too many military friends that have actually bled for the country to ever think about [voting for her].”
“Anyway, do I think [Trump is] awesome? No. Do I think he’s better than the [other] option? Absolutely!
“I think what people need to do is sit back and realize is that Donald Trump was in the public eye for thirty years and he dealt with a lot of people that he worked with, like Rosa Parks [the iconic symbol of the 20th Century civil rights movement] and tons of people within the black community, and he was never labeled a racist until he went up against the Democratic party.
“Did he say some stuff off color about women? Yeah, he talked like a man in a locker room. He talked like a guy talking to another guy, and any other guy out there that wants to say otherwise is lying through his teeth.
“Was it right? No, it wasn’t. Did he say something that was off color? Yes, he did. But, you know, he’s not a polished politician, he’s not a lifetime career politician, so he doesn’t talk like a politician; he’s not bullshitting everything he says. He’s just talking like a person, and sometimes the stuff that comes out of his mouth isn’t politically correct.”
“Again, am I a supporter of Donald Trump? No. Can I see how some of the stuff he says is wrong? Yes. I don’t support some of the stuff that’s come out of his mouth. But I also think some of the stuff that came out of his mouth was definitely inflated by the Democratic party.
OK, so, McCombs says he’s not really a Trump supporter. And this interview took place on November 15th, so it’s a bit dated. But still: thinking Trump is better than Hillary would’ve been is an implicit endorsement of racism, homophobia, misogyny and all forms of bigotry. And his quote about Rosa Parks is a laughable attempt at trying to make himself feel better for supporting someone with such vile views of other people. It’s very easy for someone like McCombs — a straight white male — to write off the concerns of others as overreactions, but it really just makes him look like a dumb, sheltered American, and based on his own quote it seems most Europeans agree.
