Did You Spot the Lords of Chaos Cast in Metallica’s “ManUNkind” Video?
Looks like we got our first taste of the upcoming Lords of Chaos movie… and most of us didn’t even realize it.
As reported yesterday, Metallica’s new video for the track “ManUNkind” was directed by former Bathory drummer Jonas Åkerlund, and features actors in corpse paint ostensibly pretending to be a black metal version of Metallica. (It’s not Åkerlund’s first time working with Metallica, by the way — he also did the video for their cover of Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page.”) What most of us failed to notice is that those actors are, in fact, members of the cast of Åkerlund’s upcoming, already-controversial Lords of Chaos film. Specifically, they’re Scream 4‘s Rory Culkin as Euronymous, Brooklyn‘s Emory Cohen as Varg “Holy Shit a Jewish Actor is Playing Me?!?!” Vikernes, The Nice Guys’ Jack Kilmer* as Dead, and Valter Skarsgård as Faust. Why is the band a Mayhem/Emperor Hybrid? Where is Hellhammer? Wasn’t Dead already dead when Count Grishnackh joined the band? Don’t ask such silly questions. Do note that Little Hodor, who is playing Slayer Magazine founder Jon “Metalion” Kristiansen in the flick, is also in the video, up front filming the whole thing.
So while we can all weep that Reese Witherspoon still hasn’t booked the role of Fenriz, we can take comfort knowing these actors are at least good enough to convincingly play a black metal band in a Metallica video without many people noticing they’re the cast of a movie everyone already hates. Uta Hagen would be proud.
*Yes, he’s also the son of The Doors star Val Kilmer. If we can get a Dead/Jim Morrison shared universe movie going, I can die a happy man.
