This Picture of Deftones in ’96 Beats Judas Priest in ’82
Yesterday, I wrote a post about a photoshoot from 1982 featuring Judas Priest and a Penthouse Pet. The pictures therein were awkward and hilarious, and made me think, Man, these guys must look back at their early career and laaaugh.
Except today, The PRP brought our attention to this #tbt photo posted on the Instagram by former road tech John “Wedge” Branon. The pic features the Deftones at the end of their tour with Pantera and White Zombie, and oh man:
BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Look at Branon’s face up front! It’s cool that Branon is posting these old photos, reminding us that before they were genre-straddling post-metal geniuses, Deftones were wearing diapers in a hotel shower somewhere.
On a more touching note, I like seeing old photos like this one with late bassist Chi Cheng chilling with the band. It’s easy to revere Cheng as a fallen musical soldier, but it’s also nice to see him being loopy with his band. Reminds you he was a human being. Wow, who knew a photo of grown men in diapers and ski-masks could get me feeling a little choked up?
