Here’s Cliff Burton’s Dad Opening His Copy of Metallica’s Back to the Front Book
This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Metallica’s Master of Puppets, arguably the greatest heavy metal album ever made. In honor of this momentous occasion, the band has released a new book called Back to the Front detailing everything that lead up to the creation of the album.
It’s also the thirtieth anniversary of the death of bassist Cliff Burton next month. Below you can watch a video of Ray Burton, Cliff’s dad, unpacking the book. It’s funny to watch what seems to be a nice older gentleman unpacking something meant to look so tough and aggro. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no fire and music here — it’s not as if Ray begins weeping in memory of Cliff and flings the book to the floor — but after thirty years, you have to expect the guy to have found peace.
Watch the video below. If only they’d kept the camera running so we could hear him say, “You’re not going to make this big a deal about all those shitty later albums, are you?”
