System of a Down’s Serj Tankian: “Civilization in its Current Form Has Run its Course”

System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian, who has made his career on pointing out the myriad ways in which the world is going to Hell in a handbasket, recently took to Facebook to comment on the most recent myriad ways in which the world is going to Hell in a handbasket. It seems like everything he’s saying is fairly common sense, but given the fact that common sense seems to have atrophied as of late, you can’t blame him for wanting to say it all anyway. This year feels like it could be one of history’s great turning points, where Humanity had the option between two paths, one of which would lead to our demise, the other of which would allow us to continue to live like assholes for another hundred years or so. And the debate is only going to grow more heated, because, historically, the conservatives’ reaction to an increase in liberalism has always been fear and violence, regardless of the time or culture. Tankian calls for “intellect” and “temperance,” but I’ll get at least one threat of physical violence just for writing this. That’s the world we’re living in right now. What fun.
