Synthwave Sunday July 4th Monday: Waveshaper, Station Nova

When we first featured Waveshaper for Synthwave Sunday, following the release of the late 2015 single “Hardware Passion,” the focus of our writeup was this: siqq tones. Deliciously retro, focused, sharp, annihilating synth tones that should make any old-school NES fiend bleep with delight.

Waveshaper’s new full length Station Nova, out now via NewRetroWave Records, has buckets of incredible sonics. But in long-player format we also get a taste for Waveshaper’s pointed songwriting; every track on this record has a big, fat, juicy hook. Just how strong is the artist’s confidence in his songcraft? “Hardware Passion,” un undeniably catchy tune previously chosen as a single, is bumped all the way down to track 5 this time around. The first four songs are possibly even stronger.
