I won’t pretend like a I know a goddamn thing about Of Mice & Men, other than that they are a metalcore band and that Sergeant D has some opinions on their singer change. But now these guys get a thumbs up from me.
In 2014, a young fan named Cassy, who is now 14, was diagnosed with brain cancer. This January, she was told she had about six months to live. Cassy had contacted Of Mice & Men in the past, and when they heard about her diagnosis they worked with The Living the Dream Foundation to give her a special day. The band took her to lunch, and then premiered their new album just for her. Finally, they surprised her by recording her clapping along to the beat of one of the tracks, which they then included in the song, thus immortalizing her in their music.
Now, look, this is a site for metalheads, so no one should be surprised when a bunch of our commenters make cancer jokes, or write something like, If I get cancer can I ask them to stop making music? But honestly, this is the kind of thing every band should do. The fans give musicians their purpose in life, and if those fans are terminally ill, and you can make their final days special, then you should do it.
So, Of Mice & Men, we salute you. You did good. Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.
Check out the post from the band’s Instagram below. Of Mice & Men’s new live album drops May 27th, but you can pre-order it here. Meanwhile, catch them on tour with Slipknot and Marilyn Manson at one of these dates.
