Re-Vamped DevilDriver Release Debut Single, “Daybreak”

“Daybreak” is the first song DevilDriver have released since recruiting drummer Austin D’Amond (ex-Chimaira, ex-Bleed the Sky), guitarist Neal Tiemann (ex-Burn Halo), and bassist Diego Ibarra (formerly of Wayne Static’s solo band). That obviously puts a lot of pressure on the song to be good; the band has to convince skeptical fans that going through such a massive line-up change since their last album won’t have a negative impact on their creative output.

So how’d they do? “Daybreak” isn’t a home run, but it’s a solid double, maybe even a triple (I gotta re-listen and let it sit with me for a bit). Parts of it are hella-wicked-gnarly, but the chorus kinda loses me. Regardless, large portions of it also don’t sound like anything DevilDriver have ever done before (that’s not a knock!), which makes sense, ’cause remaining guitarist Mike Spreitzer says that “‘Daybreak’ is the first song that [Tiemann] brought to the table early in the writing process.”
