Someone Comped Together 28 Minutes of Tool Frontman Maynard James Keenan’s Stage Banter

Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan is known for his occasional stage banter. Sometimes he’s totally on point while others he makes no sense at all, but the unifying theme is a half-joking disdain for and mocking of the audience. As a huge Tool fan myself I’d love to be able to throw my hands up in the air and say, “It’s not me he’s talking about… it’s those other dunder-headed Tool fans!” and while that may be true, it also might not be. I, too, probably care way too much about this band and project values onto them and their music that likely aren’t there, and how is that really so different from the dude who’s making a fool out of himself rocking out WAY too hard at a Tool show? We’re all nuts, just for different reasons.

ANYWAY, some Internet wiseguy comped together 28 minutes’ worth of Maynard’s stage banter from their recent West Coast run of January shows, all taken from fan-filmed footage. Some of it makes sense and some of it’ll leave you scratching your head, but… yeah man, it’s friggin’ Maynard, and it’s Tool, and it’s unquestionably one reason we love this band so much. Enjoy.
