Screw the Dark, Nightkin Have a “Fear of the Light”
It’s been over a year since we heard from Nightkin, the blackened death metal band featuring Mike “Gunface” McKenzie (The Red Chord, Stomach Earth) and ex-Black Dahlia Murder drummer Zach Gibson among its ranks. But the band is finally preparing to drop their second full-length, Oath of Elucidation, and have released a killer new track, “Fear of the Light,” as part of the lead-up to the album.
I like how Nightkin is keeping its grinding and melodic roots in their music, but still going full evil. The Red Chord and The Black Dahlia Murder were both always super dark and malevolent, but that sometimes got masked in their hardcore background and young fanbases (not that metal kids can’t be evil, just that a skinny fourteen-year-old in a neon-colored shirt doesn’t always scream “black magic”). But “Fear of the Light” is dark, churning, and references the Devil. I’m a fan.
Check out the track below. Oath of Elucidation hits stores February 23rd via Corpse Flower Records. Get warmed up on the band’s debut, streaming here.
