Clutch and Lamb of God to Harsh Buzzes at Bonnaroo 2016

My sister is the only person I know who ever braved Bonnaroo, and she told me a story that summed it pretty well. Before Bruce Springsteen’s set, a dude in a scary gnome mask and a neon-yellow shirt was dancing around, trying to freak out tripping kids by doing his weird black magic on them. He decided to mess with a group of people in front of the toilets who were refusing to enter one port-o-john. He laughed at their fear, went to the john, opened the door, and proceeded to puke all over the inside of his mask before staggering off, coughing. From everything I’ve gathered, that’s Bonnaroo.

Anyway, this year, there will be no need for scary gnome folks, as Bonnaroo’s getting a hard elbow in the ribs this year, as Lamb of God and Clutch has been announced as part of the line-up.

Now, Clutch isn’t that big a deal. They have enough jam session material and straight Maryland go-go that they can win over that hallucinogen-addled crowd easily, and even their harder stuff off of Earth Rocker and Psychic Warfare has enough of a party vibe to it that hippies can get down to it.

But Lamb of God — shit, man, that’s a metal band. Not a metallic band or a metal-influenced band. LoG are a big, riffy, guttural-vocal filled thrash metal band. At their nicest, they still sound like bug spray being shot into the eyes of a senator. They haven’t announced set times yet, but I really, really, really hope they’re playing towards the end of the night but before a big headliner, so all of the burnt-out sunburned hippies will be forced to have their faces melted. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get some converts.

Anyway, if you want to subject yourself to multiple days of Hell in order to see Lamb of God and Clutch, tickets for Bonnarroo go on sale Friday, here. But honestly, it might be better, and Hell, even cheaper, to just go to fucking Wacken. Both bands will be playing that festival, too, and at least that way you get to see Benediction and Marduk as well.
