Synthwave Sunday: Myrone, New York Pizza EP

Myrone - New York Pizza

How fucking delicious does that slice of pizza look? Gooey mozzarella dripping off the edges, tangy, sweet tomato sauce bursting through its pores and the crispy crust, reheated to that al dente crunch that only a New York pizza oven can achieve. Perfection. I’d carry a .45 as protection if I were eating that slice too, especially if I lived in the dirty, dark, dingy NYC of 1985… or perhaps 2050, take your pick. Maybe regular folk like us will even be able to afford real estate here by then.

Myrone’s new EP New York Pizza is less guitar-centric than much of his work, but no less badass. The three tunes therein are some of the least rock-based he’s put out under the Myrone name (his hip-hop/DJ collaborations excepted), making New York Pizza as straight-up a synthwave record as he’s released. He’s a master at this stuff, too, no surprise: the synth melodies snake through one another like rats slinking through the night, the midrange-heavy bass hits you straight in the chest like a purse-snatching mugger and the programmed drums are era-appropriate in their gated, artificial cheesiness. Myrone’s trademark #softshred electric guitar leads are still here, they’re just used in the background to serve the song as a whole instead of as the focus in and of themselves (think: the way Prince uses guitar). Don’t worry; EP-closer “Corporate Culture” has an extended solo for you Myrone shred fans.
