Aegaeon Return With Punishing New Track, First in Over Two Years
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard anything from Aegaeon, who’ve released just a single song since their 2012 EP Being. Metal Injection tells us that lineup changes are at least partially to blame, which makes sense; it’s really hard to write and record music without a stable crew of members, let alone tour (as far as I can tell, Aegaeon’s last tour was also in 2012).
But it seems as if things may now be on the up-and-up for the Indiana-based progressive death metallers. Vocalist Julian Kersey (he performed on the band’s lone 2013 track “Neural Union” too) and drummer Phil Cancilla join original bassist Nick Scott and original guitarist Sebastian Brown for the band’s brand new track “The Integral Path,” which hit the Internet on New Year’s Eve.
“The Integral Path” is absolutely fantastic, reminding us why Aegaeon were included amongst the likes of exciting up and comers in the death metal scene in the early ’10s alongside Fallujah, Rivers of Nihil, Black Crown Initiate, etc. It’s got that atmospheric touch all of the aforementioned bands have, but it’s also uncompromisingly brutal and has a distinct nuanced touch unique to Aegaeon. No word on a new album yet, but hopefully it’ll have more tracks like this one.
