Videos: Corey Taylor and Halestorm Perform STP Covers Live in Honor of Scott Weiland
Raise your hand if you’ve been jamming STP religiously in the days since Scott Weiland’s death. I haven’t been able to stop; I went through the entire discography twice, listened to Tiny Music… probably a half dozen times on its own, and even watched a DVD I have of their electrifying 2001 performance at the Rolling Rock Town Fair in Latrobe, PA (footage of that is on YouTube too).
An even better way of honoring Weiland’s career and creative output: performing one of his songs live. Several bands have undoubtedly done so since Friday and more will continue to do so in the following weeks and months, but for now we get footage of Corey Taylor (guesting with all-star LA cover band Royal Machines, also featuring Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison and Chris Chaney) and Halestorm performing “Sex Type Thing” and “Interstate Love Song” at their respective shows.
Taylor, of course, auditioned for the vocalist spot in Velvet Revolver vacated by Weiland in 2008, and later slammed Weiland as “a lazy piece of shit” for recording a Christmas album, although in the same breath he professed his appreciation of Weiland’s work in STP and Velvet Revolver. His cover of “Sex Type Thing” is solid — he’s got the right voice and range to do it justice. Halestorm’s cover is good too; Lizzy Hale puts her range on full display here, bellowing out Weiland’s lows and hitting highs he could probably never approach.
Watch them both below.
