Synthwave Sunday: Myrone, “Artificial Ego”
It’s all Myrone’s fault. This whole synthwave obsession; all of it!
Myrone is hardly even a synthwave artist anymore. While some of his earlier work leaned heavily on synths and electronic beats — and all of it has a distinctly ’80s feel — Myrone’s style has moved steadily further into the rock spectrum, coining the genre tag “soft shred” to describe his brand of ’80s shredder-inspired, danceable, funky jams. But it’s all thanks to the power of Soundcloud and YouTube autoplay recommendations on the Myrone tracks I was spinning all winter and spring that Synthwave Sunday even exists.
And soft shred is exactly what you’re gonna get with “Artificial Ego,” Hugh B.’s latest smasher. The lead guitar lines are so luscious, the synths so tasty, the turnarounds and chord changes so completely masterful and effortless…. agggghhhh it’s just not fair! It’s too good. I can’t stand it.
Meanwhile, Myrone just released a 7″ for the Drift Stage video game soundtrack that’s shaped like the Exclusive Coupe for which his smash hit single is named. How badass is that? Pre-order it here or download the soundtrack via Bandcamp.
