Protest the Hero Just Released a New Track Called “Tidal”… But Did You Even Know About it?
If a famous band releases a new track in the wild but no one’s there to hear it, does it make a sound?
That’s kinda what I find myself wondering with regards to Protest the Hero’s new one “Tidal.” It’s behind locked walls, only available to those who paid $12 to sign up for six once-monthly track releases comprising the Pacific Myth EP, in effect PtH’s own subscription service.
The pros: it’s a cool model that people wanna talk about. PtH keeps all the money. Fans get the tracks before anyone else, along with instrumental versions and detailed artwork.
The cons: the media isn’t posting the new tracks because they aren’t embeddable. PtH are only preaching to the converted, not reaching anyone new.
I’m sure that even the dudes in Protest would tell you this method of release is an experiment. It’s the wild wild west. So we’ll see how it all pans out once all six tracks have been released. But my gut tells me Protest would like be getting more attention — and reaching more people — than they are. And I’ll bet the reach is only going to diminish with each successive track release as the whole “hey cool, a subscription model!” buzz wears off.
ANYWAY, here’s the new track “Tidal,” the second to be released so far (“Ragged Tooth” came out last month). It’s a ripper! You can subscribe to the Pacific Myth EP here to gain access to the track.
