Here’s the Art From Rob Zombie’s Pinball Machine
When I first heard that Rob Zombie was making a pinball machine, I was like, “YEEEAH!” Pinball machines have a cool, old-school solidness to them, and are a great way to show off weird, surreal art. I’d totally spend a drunken evening pumping quarters into a Rob Zombie-themed table, cackling as Sid Haig quotes and snippets from Hellbilly Deluxe blasted out every time I hit a buzzer.
Well, Zombie has recently released the backing art to his pinball table (above), and it’s… all right, I guess.
It’s not that the art here is bad, per se. It’s just lacking in that Zombie low-brow thing, that Big Daddy Ed Roth kind of chaotic monster party that Zombie’s so good at. Rob’s own art generally leans towards that — blistered, slack-jawed monsters with their eyes oozing out of their sockets. That’s what I was hoping for, a pinball machine straight out of some teenage kid’s dirtbag dreams. This feels more geared to the classic monster crowd.
Anyway, this is just the backing art, the main image you see behind the machine’s glass plate. For all I know, the inside of the table itself will be filled with weirdo bikers and big-titted Franken-chicks whose skin rots away when you paddle the ball up a metal ramp.
The table, dubbed ‘Rob Zombie’s Spookshow International,’ is due out in 2016.
