This Asshole Really, Really, REALLY Hates “Metalcore” Band Deafheaven

MetalSucks reader Arthur DM alerts us to the YouTube channel Hipster Black Metal, a portal devoted exclusively to bashing the genre that simpletons have taken to calling, duh, “hipster black metal.”

This is 2015 and the word “hipster” has become completely meaningless and dated, but that’s besides the point. Take a look at HBM’s review of Deafheaven’s latest album Bermuda, in which Mr. HBM accuses the band of transitioning from “screamo shoegaze” to metalcore by comping together a bunch of riffs from the album that admittedly DO sound kinda metalcorey and laying them over footage of scene kids moshing. I think it’s pretty clear that HBM is trolling here — or at the very least exaggerating to underscore his hatred of Deafheaven — and the review ends up being pretty funny.

Here’s where Mr. HBM loses me, though: his review of Myrkur’s latest album M is completely misogynistic and sexist. He calls Myrkur a “whore” and labels her music “anorexic black metal.” Wanna criticize her music? Fine. Many have. But not only is he completely unfunny and blatantly offensive in his chosen method of doing so, but it’s assholes like this guy that make our entire scene look bad by continuing to shut the door on women who dare enter this vaunted hall of men. Fuck this guy so hard.
