Red Fang Drain All The Sentiment From Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love”
I’m kind of a big fan of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” You know the one, the song you either slow-dance to at weddings or choke back tears through at the bar. Elvis isn’t really my cup of tea, either–I’m much more of a Sinatra fan overall. But there’s something unabashedly sweet and sad about this slow, plunking song about unavoidable love. It gets me in the feels, every time.
But Red Fang don’t give a fuck about my sad-sack obsessions! They recently premiered their reinterpretation of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” over at Loudwire, and man, it’s just a crushing doom track. There’s no melody, there’s no sentiment, there’s only a droning death march that seems to come from a reading of the song as a sweat-drenched heroin overdose. It’s admirable in its complete re-imagining of the original — especially for a band who could’ve just done some traditional Elvis worship and still have gotten away with it — but it’s definitely jarring if you like the sweetness of the Presley version.
Anyway, listen to “Can’t Help Falling In Love” below. Hopefully, they’ll write a galloping power metal cover of “Hound Dog” soon after.
