Fear, Emptiness, Decibel: Listen to Jungle Rot Cover Hallows Eve’s “Speed Freak” for the Flexi Series

junglerotflexiBefore there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is Decibel. Here’s managing editor Andrew Bonazelli…

Lots of modern death metal bands overcompensate for lack of heart and direction with chops. It’s no different than Micropenis Man and his jacked-up Chevy. It takes more guts than we often give credit for to stay within your abilities and be productive, yet unpretentious. Jungle Rot have accomplished just that for over 20 years now. Vince said it himself when the band dropped “Paralyzed Prey” from this summer’s latest Victory slab, Order Shall Prevail: “Sometimes simple is good, and though they’ve not achieved the recognition or success of many of their ’90s DM peers, Jungle Rot have consistently been churning out simple but deliciously fantastic death metal for two decades. Sometimes you just wanna FUCK ALL and not think about it, nahmean?”

We nahmean. That’s why we hooked up with the reliable Wisconsin death metal institution for the Decibel Flexi Series. The four-piece stepped up to the plate, as always, and crushed their take on thrash masters Hallows Eve’s “Speed Freak,” from 1988’s Monument. “We figured if anyone was gonna cover Hallows Eve, it would be a song from their first two albums,” says bassist James Genenz. “But we chose to go with something from their third album, Monument, as it’s usually overlooked.” The rager is obviously a personal favorite for vocalist Dave Matrise. “‘Speed Freak’ was the song that I would play over and over again and again in my first car going to school,” he says. “It’s the song we always played hanging with my buddies years ago, driving to parties and fucking shit up!”

Parties are made for fucking shit up. Grab the November issue to kick the soundtrack off right.

The November issue of Decibel also features Iron Maiden, Napalm Death, and The Black Dahlia Murder, and can be purchased here… but anyone who doesn’t just get a full subscription will not be able to fuck shit up at parties.
