Admire Omnium Gatherum’s “Skyline”
Omnium Gatherum tend to be a little hit-or-miss for me; sadly, their new single, “Skyline,” mostly falls under the “miss” column. It’s not a bad song, but except for a few touches (e.g., whatever otherworldly keyboard plugin Aapo Koivisto is utilizing), it’s more generic than the phrase ” it’s more generic than [blank].” Even Markus Vanhala’s awesome guitar solo sounds like it could be by any number of other dudes. And the song’s simplicity works both for and against it — for because, yeah, it’s catchy, against because, again, it’s indistinguishable from any other number of songs.
Put another way: if they played Finnish melodeath at the drugstore, this is the Finnish melodeath they would play.
Stream “Skyline” below and see what you think for yourself. Omnium Gatherum’s new, yet-to-be-titled album will be out in February. The band are on tour with Insomnium now; get dates here.
