Mastodon’s Brann Dailor Says Brent Hinds “Wasn’t Exactly Serious” About Hating Heavy Metal
Sometimes people say dumb shit in interviews, and then when the world is like, “Hey, that was a dumb thing to say,” they’re all, “IT WAS TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT!”, and we’re all, EYE ROLL, because the dumb comment was almost never actually taken out of context.
One exception to this rule may actually be some remarks Mastodon’s Brent Hinds made last month, the TL;DNR version of which was “I hate heavy metal music,” the NTL;R version of which was…
“I never really liked heavy metal in the first place. I came from Alabama playing country music, surf rock, rockabilly, and stuff like that. I just went through a phase in my 20s where I thought it was rebellious to play heavy metal. And then I met Brann [Dailor, Mastodon drummer] and Bill [Kelliher], and they were really, really, really into heavy metal. And ever since then, I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I f**king hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band.”
If you told me that Hinds’ tone while making this statement was sarcastic or, at the very least, goofy, and that he was just fucking around, I’d actually believe you, ’cause this is one of those instances where tone is important, and the printed word can’t/doesn’t always convey tone.
And, ohheywouldntchaknow, Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor said just this during a recent Reddit AMA:
Which, like I said, sounds plausible. So I guess we can all go back to loving Brent Hinds. Or, at the very least, not busting his balls about having to play Knotfest 2016.
