Check Out This Mosh Pit Recorded With A 360* Camera
At my last job, I had the opportunity to try out an Oculus Rift headset, and let me tell you, that motherfucker is amazing. Disorienting, bizarre, but totally awesome. I flew among the solar system. It blew my mind.
One of the cool things the Oculus representative explained to us about 3D recording technology is that it will change the streaming concert experience, allowing viewers from home to remotely watch a show from the middle of the crowd. Fans will be able to log in and appear in the audience or backstage while a band is playing, where they’ll be able to see the whole show around them when they turn their heads.
So it’s cool to see that this technology is being used record ultra-violent metal shows! Below is a 360* recording of Heaven Shall Burn causing a Wall Of Death at Resurrection Fest in Spain. While the whole thing is a little off–you’d need a headset for the complete experience–it really does get down that peripheral vision, where you can notice stuff happening from the corner of your eye. Check it out:
Of course, the Oculus Heavy Metal Experience won’t be complete until the headset can release a spritz of beer and other people’s sweat. Someday, hopefully. For now, baby steps.
