Climb the Luscious Doom Pyramid with Giza
When we first wrote about Seattle’s Giza in 2013 I described them as “ambient doom.” In retrospect that’s probably an oversimplification (gee, distilling a band’s music down to miniscule sub-genres is an oversimplification? nawwwww), because the word “ambient” comes loaded with all sorts of musical preconceptions. So how about “luscious doom?” I don’t think anyone’s claimed that one yet. And although the word “luscious” may come with all sorts of preconceptions of its own, is it really such a bad thing to have your music associated with adjectives usually reserved for sexual arousal?
Check out Giza’s new track “Cenotaph,” which premiered yesterday at The Obelisk. Giza will release Migration, their third album, on August 1st, and as was the case with the first two this record was produced and mixed by Matt Bayles. Perhaps that’s why it sounds so fucking gigantic and, uh, luscious; not to take anything away from the band’s performance here, which is virgin tight, but Bayles just has a way of making metal bands sound absolutely massive without losing any of their rawness and energy, something that’s so, so hard to do.
More Giza here.
