Between the Buried and Me - Coma Ecliptic

Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to the first ever Friday edition of Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and now, we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage. Fuck Tuesday — that shit is so three days ago! Now crank this shit up!

Hi there, MetalSucks reader! It’s me Anso DF welcoming you to the first-ever Friday STCOT. Tuesdays were great lo these many years, but we fear not change! Now that New Releases day has been moved to Friday, we can charge into our weekends with a snootful of new tunes to fill our leisure time. I’ve already penciled in a few quiet Saturday minutes to take down this Bison Machine album, which locks in with recent gems from Comet Control and Groan.

Atheist’s Cornea (Temporary Residence)
On a playlist with: Explosions In The Sky, Glassjaw, Mogwai
Listen “Footsteps In The Distance” and “Blue Moonlight” (here)

It’s a riveting pursuit to follow the stateside fortunes of bands native to Japan. Sounding like Western rock music with an accent and titled incomprehensibly, their music is often redundant to America’s own dumb/awesome bands, and so it resists traction with English-language fans. The success stories of Babymetal and Dir en grey represent the exceptions, for they offer something that no US artist can. Elsewhere are Melt-Banana and Envy, aesthetic opposites but spiritual twins for their indefatigable touring and humility. They get better, they go anywhere to prove it.

Shit Happens (Rotten Roll Rex)
On a playlist with: Pathologist, early Carcass, Meat Shits
Listen “Fart Fart Away” (here) “Toi Toi Story” (here) “Vylízání hnědky stokilový štětky” (here)

Okay, I just had a thought. Is it really so wise to unveil new releases on a Friday? On that day, is anybody’s mind on shopping for new music? Aren’t we using our Friday to drool over our imminent free time, when we can run naked, free, and hammered for 60 hours or so? Will we slam on the brakes to take in our most anticipated jams? Will we cut into our golf/boat/weed/porking time to familiarize ourselves with unknown new shit? Come Monday, will we even remember Friday’s new onsales, or will we be occupied with a new week’s concerns and pressures?

Possessor Stay DeadPossessor
Stay Dead EP (Medusa Crush)
On a playlist with: Death Penalty, White Zombie, The Oath
Listen Stay Dead full stream (here)

From occult rock to stoner metal, the 1970s are well represented in extreme music. But if we sent an emissary from now back in time to make heavier, brutaller proto-metal, the result would resemble resent albums from Demon Lung, Death Penalty, and now Possessor. Simple and loose, crushing and hateful — the best of the ’70s and today.

Between the Buried and Me - Coma EclipticBetween The Buried And Me
Coma Ecliptic (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Dream Theater, Cephalic Carnage, Gentle Giant
Listen Coma Ecliptic full stream (here)

For those of us following along with BTBAM since they became awesome nearly ten years ago, it may not be vital to clutch to our bosoms their newest 70 minutes of noodly prog metal and elusive melodies. For those of us that are in some way not yet sated (ie. new and/or ravenous fans), Coma Ecliptic is so very vital. Few surprises — or at least, surprises about surprises — just BTBAM doing their awesome thing. Yknow, like that bore Scorsese.

Vardan Winter WoodsVardan
Winter Woods (Moribund)
On a playlist with: Arckanum, Bathory, Mortuary Drape
Listen “Winter Woods Pt. 1” (here)

Gosh, again, I must state that I am dying to measure the longterm success of the RIAA’s decision to issue new albums on Fridays, not Tuesdays. A Tuesday new release is motivation to visit a retailer, online or IRL — and dash off a few impulse purchases as well. But on Fridays? We’re either out shopping already — or we have shit to do. Fun shit. Luckily for Vardan, our planet’s most prolific black metal soloist, any overlooked new releases will soon be followed by more new releases. After all, Winter Woods is, like, his fourth album in 2015? Can’t miss ’em!
