Steve Wariner and Dave MustaineWhen describing the new Megadeth album during a recent interview with Guitar World, Dave Mustaine said a variation of the magic word that basically all metal musicians use to describe their new albums, ESPECIALLY if, as is the case with Megadeth, their last album sucked. And that magic word, of course, is “heavier.”

“I think a lot of people are gonna be happy, because the music is really aggressive again.”

Which should surprise only the simplest of minds: Megadeth need to gain back all the fans they alienated with Super Collider, and they’ve got dudes from Lamb of God and Angra on the album, which certainly suggests that the new record will be a helluva lot more metal than the last one.

Oh, except one thing — according to The Tennessean, the album will also feature an appearance by country music Steve Wariner:

Wariner is mixing things up in other ways, too. He recently recorded a steel guitar part for a Megadeth song. The singer/guitarist met Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine in the recording studio, and then Mustaine came to see Wariner perform.

“Worlds collide,” Wariner quipped. “It’s funny. Imagine Megadeth with steel guitar. That’s what I did, and Dave Mustaine is the nicest guy in the world. Isn’t that crazy?”

Actually, yes, Steve, positing that Dave Mustaine is the nicest guy in the world is crazy. Almost as crazy as promising fans that the new Megadeth album is going to be “really aggressive” before revealing that it will feature an appearance by a guy whose most popular songs have titles such as “Holes in the Floor of Heaven,” “Katie Wants a Fast One,” and “Bluebonnet Memories.”

The thing is, the idea of having some steel guitar on the new Megadeth album in and of itself isn’t terrifying… but this sure feels a lot like having David Draiman on Super Collider, doesn’t it? Like, they didn’t get, say, Paul Franklin, who plays actual, no-bullshit country music on steel guitar; they got a guy who wrote songs for Garth Brooks and Keith Urban. Not super encouraging, is it?
