Dave Mustein’s Best of 2015… So Far
The deeper I dig into the recesses of the metalsphere, the further those recesses seem to expand. Of course, keeping up with everything metal is like herding cats, but grinding Bandcamp year after year isn’t nearly that futile – it always feels like a novel exercise in broadening the scope of my knowledge and taste. There is so much out there, and it’s more accessible than ever. Some bands color inside the lines, some don’t; some bands play “turbo polka” alongside Adult Swim-esque psychedelia and some bands are free-jazz styled solo black metal projects that boast “upwards of 100 riffs per song.” Don’t buy into the “modern metal sucks” brouhaha; the macrocosm of metal, both new and old, is alive and well. Here’s what’s tickled my fancy the most thus far into 2015:
Arcturus – Arcturian (Prophecy Productions)
Author & Punisher – Melk En Honing (Housecore)
Dead In The Manger – Cessation (20 Buck Spin)
Imperial Triumphant – Abyssal Gods (Code666)
Irreversible Mechanism – Infinite Fields (Blood Music)
Jute Gyte – Ship of Theseus (Jeshimoth Entertainment)
Leviathan – Scar Sighted (Profound Lore)
Malthusian – Below the Hengiform (Invictus Productions)
Outre – Ghost Chants (Godz ov War Productions)
Pyramids – A Northern Meadow (Profound Lore)
Pyrrhon – Growth Without End (Handshake Inc.)
