Does the New Sepultura Song Get Under Your Skin?
You may recall — or maybe you don’t, I dunno — that in celebration of their thirtieth anniversary, Sepultura recently announced that they’d written “a new song that expresses the respect and love” the band has for their fans.
Well, that song, “Under My Skin,” has been released, and it’s… okay. Basically on par with most Sepultura material in the post-Caval-era. Honestly, the music is fine (“fine,” not “great”), but holy shit, the lyrics are bad to the point of distraction. Derrick Green keeps screaming the name of the band, I guess in case we’ve forgotten what we’re listening to, and everything is insanely on the nose and self-referential in the silliest of ways (“We love what we do/ with attitude and dedication”). It’s probably not the worst song you’ll hear today (Have Thy Art is Murder released their new single yet???), but it’s pretty sad when you consider the monumental nature of the legacy that it celebrates.
Check out “Under My Skin” for yourself below and see if you agree or not. It’s the title track from the band’s new EP, which is out now on Nuclear Blast.
