Having Trouble Coming Up With a Cool Name for Your Metal Band? Try the Heavy Metal Band Name Generator!
Coming up with a cool name for a metal band is hard, and coming up with a cool name for a metal band that isn’t already in use is even harder. And while it might be fair to scold musicians for simply not being creative enough — there are 950 bands with the word “death” in their name listed on The Metal Archives — this the 21st century, when there’s some form of technological help for every issue. Consequently: creativity, schmeativity! The website for Norwegian radio station NRK P3 has now launched The Internet’s Official Heavy Metal Band Name Generator. I don’t know how it got to be the official name generator for ALL of the internet — nobody asked me my opinion! — but I guess Norway has as fair a claim to the title as any country.
So how is the Heavy Metal Band Name Generator (which I shall heretofore refer to as the “HMBNG” for the sake of convenience)? Er, okay I guess?
I take some issue with the fact that you’re not allowed to specify the sub-genre of band you’re starting, because, for example a great name for a death metal band might not be a great name for a power metal band. Like, if Prostitute Disfigurement sounded like Demons and Wizards, that’d be weird, right? So, yeah, sadly, you might have to use this thing a whole bunch of times to find a name that’s actually right for you.
Also a problem: it uses the same words far too often.
By way of example, here are the first ten names the generator generated for me:
BLEEDHIDE
SPEEDPOOP
THE DARK MAXIMUS
TEENAGE BACH
HITMAN BACH
TEENAGE SNOT
KILL THE HOLE
SULPHURIC GAS
DRAGONFIST
TIGHT MASTERS
So, yeah, there’s definitely room for improvement.
Still, if you’re interested, you can have fun with the HMBNG here.
