Deftones: Yes We Can(trell)!

I have a weird relationship with the music of the Deftones — they have my utmost respect, but I actually find their songs kinda hit or miss. Sometimes I hear a Deftones jam and I’m all, “FUCKIN’ A!”, and sometimes I hear one and I’m all, “Let’s take a nap!”

My point being that I am now 100% more interested in the new Deftones album because even though I only kinda-sorta like them, Chino Moreno tells KOMP Digital (transcription via Metal Insider)…

“Jerry (Cantrell) is on the [new Deftones] album. I didn’t know if he wanted anybody to know or not. But I guess I’ve just spilled the beans. But he came in… There’s this one track that… in the demo stages of it, I was, like, ‘There’s this hole in there…’”

So how is Jerry’s appearance, Chino? Is it awesome?

“It’s awesome. It’s like you’re hearing a Deftones song, but all of a sudden, a little bit of Alice in Chains seeps its way in there, and it’s kind of neat. I mean, me, as a fan, I was just sitting back and a little tear came out of my eye.”

Even though Ms. Chains and The ‘Tones have way different approaches to making heavy music, they’re both moodier than an adolescent girl on he perioud, so it’s actually not that hard to imagine Cantrell contributing some of his tasty leads to one of their tracks. Whether the song ends up being sweet or sour, it should be interesting!

The new Deftones album doesn’t have a name yet, but it does have a tentative September 25 release date.
