Watch Jimmy Fallon and Jack Black Recreate Extreme’s Video for “More Than Words”
If you watched MTV in the early 90s, then chances are that you remember Extreme’s video for “More Than Words” (a.k.a. “The Prettiest Song Ever Written About a Dude Trying to Get Laid”) quite well. The intimate, black and white clip featured only two members of the band — vocalist Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt — was actually fairly unique at the time, especially considering that the band were most famous for harder-edged rockers like “Play with Me” and “Get the Funk Out.”
Well, for reasons that don’t seem to extend beyond “they thought it would be funny,” Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon recently produced a shot-for-shot remake of the video for The Tonight Show, complete with costumes and wigs and all the necessary accoutrements for playing the roles of Cherone and Bettencourt. What’s amazing about the clip is that, aside from the funny faces Black and Fallon make, the performance is quite good — listen without watching and you’d think this was a perfectly valid cover of the original.
This being the case, it is my sincere hope that Black and Fallon team up for an entire album’s worth of hair metal ballad covers. Not only would it probably be pretty good, but it would almost certainly win the Grammy for Best Metal Performance, which would be slightly less embarrassing than when Tenacious D. won. Just a thought.
