Resident Evil is Metal!!

Post #7 Photo - Resident EvilBetween my full time job, promoting my new album, writing new music, and playing with our new litter of kittens, I’ve somehow managed to find some time to play the new Resident Evil game, Revelations 2. It helps that the game is pure awesomeness, making it difficult for me to put down the controller.

The original Resident Evil was the first game I purchased for my Playstation One back in 1996. Prior to that the closest I had come to a decent horror game was the frustratingly difficult Splatterhouse for Sega Genesis. Resident Evil was a colossal breath of fresh air; a creepy atmosphere, large areas to explore, zombies, and plenty of gore. I was immediately hooked, and I’ve been a loyal customer to the series ever since.

Revelations 2 is, in my opinion, the best RE game since the original trilogy. It’s a return to the fun, creepy, slower paced monster-fest of the original games without feeling like a simple repetition. I can already tell that I’ll be making a return trip to this mysterious island once the credits roll.

A few days ago I was joyously emptying my shotgun into an Ironhead while listening to Six Feet Under’s “Bringer of Blood” in my earbud. It occurred to me that Resident Evil is metal. And not just a little metal. It’s really, really metal. The settings, monsters, weapons, violence, and gore all have the makings of a killer metal music video.

This started me thinking; what other video games are metal? And what kind of metal are they? I think Silent Hill is metal, but what kind? Atmospheric black metal, perhaps? What about the Metal Gear series? Technical death? And what about the Castlevania series? Symphonic metal or goth metal? The possibilities are endless!

So what video games do you think are metal, and what genre would you put them in?
