Listen to the Insane New Jaga Jazzist Song “Starfire”
I’m not sure why so many metal dudes love Jaga Jazzist, but I’ve seen the experimental electro-prog band appear on more metal bands’ “van playlists” than any other singular non-metal act (save maybe for Robyn).
Maybe it’s the super tripped out, ’70s proto-prog vibes — Yes, King Crimson, etc — or maybe it’s that they’re from Norway and thereby grim by association, even though there’s nothing grim about their music and there’s not even really anything metal about it either. Could it simply be that it just straight rips? Because hot damn, it does. Jaga Jazzist could also just be one of those bands that appeals mostly to musicians, because there’s a heckuva lot going on in their music.
Heavy Blog is Heavy tells us there’s a new Jaga Jazzist album coming down the pike on June 2nd called Starfire, and its title track is currently up for streaming. The nearly nine-minute banger has everything you’d expect and hope for from Jaga Jazzist: twisted synths, spazzed out beats, undeniable melody and, yes, tons of crazy prog freak outs that make you wanna dust off that vinyl copy of Tormato.
