It’s the Metal Cover of Kris Kross’ “Jump” You Never Knew You Needed
I’m really dating myself here, but when Kris Kross released “Jump” in 1992 me and cohort of friends thought it was THE SHIT. Kids like us! on MTV! Can you believe it?? I’m sure that the track was completely repulsive to anyone above pre-teen years, but no fucks given here.
So it’s no surprise that this metal cover of that “classic” track — if it even qualifies for that status without the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia — tickles me in that sweet spot. I haven’t bothered to look to see what other metal covers of this song are out there (there MUST be several), but I think Deaththrob (they should’ve just named themselves Deathrob) did a really good job here — their version maintains the integrity (lol) of the original but they’ve completely made it their own. Digging the keyboard flourishes for emphasis in the chorus, and the singer does a pretty good matching Kris’ (or was it Kross?) breakneck raps.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go because… I missed the bus. It’s something that I’ll never, ever, ever do again.
