Looking for a Good Book? Take Some Suggestions from Red Fang

But do you ever like to read stuff that isn’t MetalSucks? Do you ever like to read stuff that isn’t MetalSucks or some other website presenting information in the manner most suitable to our modern society’s collective case of ADHD? Do you ever like to read — gulp! — BOOKS?!?!
Well, if you do, Red Fang have some recommendations for you!
The Portland quartet were recently “guest readers” for the Multnomah* County Library, which is just a fun way of saying that they were asked to recommend some of their favorite books. For example, here’s bassist/vocalist Aaron Beam on Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, which happens to be one of my favorite novels of all time, too!
“This is the book that got me back into reading novels after a very long period of reading only nonfiction and short stories. This is one of the most terrifying books I have ever read. I actually jumped a couple times from surprise. To do that with the printed word is, um…beyond words. Apart from the horror story, this book is gorgeous in its simple yet deeply expressive, nearly poetic prose. I saw the book as a positive expression of the sacrifice all fathers make for their sons. And it led me to read Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses, which are both incredible, yet much denser novels.”
Everything Mr. Beam says about The Road is true (and Blood Meridian is also great… I’ve never read Horses). It also made me weep harder than Dave Mustaine reading Metallica’s sales figures, which is a rare feat, because I’m mostly dead inside.

*Fun fact: it’s Chinook for “melanoma.”
