Armageddon
Captivity & Devourment (Listenable)
On a playlist with: Arch Enemy, The Agonist, Amon Amarth
Listen “Captivity & Devourment” (here) “The Watcher” (here)
Say, do you like throwback riffage, big solos, and mind-bending triplets? Does the 2:00-mark in “Captivity & Devourment” (above) make you want to headbutt a goat? If so, you’re probably already a fan of Armageddon mastermind Christopher Armott (ex-Arch Enemy). Captivity & Devourment might not have the zing of Gossow-era Arch Enemy, but it sure as hell has the bite!
·
Midnight Bullet
Lose My Face (Inverse)
On a playlist with: clogging the toilet on the first date
Listen “Lose My Face” (here)
So the awards for Suckiest Song Of The Week and Suckiest Music Video Of The Week both go to Midnight Bullet. If you’ve ever wanted to watch a bunch of dudes play poker, smoke cigarettes, and dance around in a warehouse for four minutes, here ya go.
·
Raised Fist
From The North (Epitaph)
On a playlist with:
Listen From The North full stream (here)
Some hardcore bands really get it — and thank Jesus in the manger for Raised Fist who’ve proven that you can be 100% metal while losing none of the hardcore. From The North is sweet, simple, straightforward, and headstrong (just like any decent hardcore), but actually keeps you interested all the way through (little repetition). Mosh/rock on!
·
Raunchy
Vices.Virtues.Visions (Massacre)
On a plalist with: Sybreed, Mnemic, Threat Signal
Listen “Truth Taker” (here)
The metalcore bubble has popped! We were (and still are) swimming in poor-/mediocre-core, but core-heads like Raunchy are a sign that we may have a resurgence nigh. Vices.Virtues.Visions attempts to break metalcore stereotypes without completely jumping ship. And while all the traditional core elements are there, the album is fresh and snappy.
·
Nachtreich / Spectral Lore
The Quivering Lights split EP (Bindrune)
On a playlist with: Kauan, Alcest, Burzum
Listen The Quivering Lights split EP full stream (here)
It’s a harrowing experience listening to two masterminds of black metal trade off on one album: Nachtreich of woodsy, neoclassical overtones and Spectral Lore with incomparable depth and darkness. The Quivering Lights EP is a showstopper which must be experienced again and again before coming alive, just like Spectral Lore’s III (which topped the Best of 2014 list of Sammy O’Hagar and made me crap my pants).
·
Caïna
Setter of Unseen Snares (Broken Limbs/Skin & Bones/Church Of Fuck)
On a playlist with: Krallice, Spectral Lore, Castevet
Listen/Watch “Vowbound” (here)
Caïna lacks darkness in the wide gamut of black metal, but they easily make amends with distilled anger. Their last two albums, Temporary Antennae (2008) and Hands That Pluck (2011) are horrific noise and hate! This bit of Setter of Unseen Snares shows Caïna’s progression toward something a bit less outrageous, but still completely mad.
