East of the Wall Visit Nick Drake’s “River Man”
Don’t get freaked out by the first minute of East of the Wall’s cover of Nick Drake’s “River Man”: the track may begin as a faithful recreation of Drake’s original, but it doesn’t take long for East of the Wall to get all East of the Wally with shit. Maybe it never gets as heavy as, say, “Linear Failure” from The Apologist, but it’s just as angular and techy (drummer Seth Rheam and bassist Chris Alfano’s performances, in particular, stand out). Just as impressive is that it retains the beauty of Drake’s song even as it ditches all the orchestral stuff and brings the rock. In other words: it manages fidelity to Drake’s recording without just being a rote recreation. It’s killer!
