Remembering Dimebag Darrell Ten Years Later: Rivers of Nihil’s Brody Uttley
On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was brutally murdered while playing live with Damageplan. The already-legendary Pantera guitarist was just thirty-eight years old. Today, the tenth anniversary of his death, heavy hitters from throughout the metal world will honor this fallen icon on MetalSucks by sharing their favorite Dime riffs, solos, and, in some cases, personal remembrances. Below, Brody Uttley, lead guitarist for Rivers of Nihil, discusses Pantera’s “Floods”:
The solo (and outro) in “Floods” does an absolutely perfect job of combining beauty and power. From the power slide into to first note of the solo to the beautifully arranged Add9 progression to the ripping pentatonic section, this solo makes me want to punch through a god damn wall and cry a fucking river of tears at the same time.
The first time I heard this solo, I had only really heard heavy bands using speed to get their point across in their guitar solos. Dimebag taught me that you can be a monster shredder and still pull back the reins at times to let the part breathe. Keep the listener on their toes!
Thanks, Dime.
