Remembering Dimebag Darrell Ten Years Later: Periphery’s Jake Bowen
On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was brutally murdered while playing live with Damageplan. The already-legendary Pantera guitarist was just thirty-eight years old. Today, the tenth anniversary of his death, heavy hitters from throughout the metal world will honor this fallen icon on MetalSucks by sharing their favorite Dime riffs, solos, and, in some cases, personal remembrances. Below, Jake Bowen, guitarist for Periphery, discusses his favorite Dime solo:
Today I’d like to talk about the solo from “Throes of Rejection” by Pantera. I mean, just listen to this shit… *turns up volume* You hear that badass shit man? From 2:58 to 3:05, it’s all scary and just, like, WAHHHH-WAHHHHHHHHHH WAHHHHHHHHHHWAH-WAH-WAH-WAHHHHHHHH!
Then, at 3:06, you have all these licks with attitude coming at you with some really fucking cool needily stuff going all the way until 3:17. And here you are, thinking that could be the end of it — but no fucking way. You’re piping the fuck down while you let Uncle Dimebag show you how the play the guitar.
3:19 is the point you realize that if your vibrato doesn’t have that much English, you need to work on your shit. I’m pretty sure at 3:32 Dimebag was just like, “Fuck this shit” and started just ripping insane licks out of his fretboard while that super-nasty riff is going on underneath it. And, of course, he ends the solo with a crazy fast run into some real gnarly bends.
