Watch: Episode 5 of NOLA, Noisey’s New Orleans Metal Documentary
A music documentary can always rivet your attention, even if its topic is out of your zone of interest. That’s the lesson of Noisey‘s ongoing examination of New Orleans and its metal, anyway. For even those who kinda gag at the New Orleans vibe of party tourism, culture stew, self-congratulation, and hard drugs can watch NOLA: Life, Death, And Heavy Blues From The Bayou without blinking. It is awesome!
Of course, when metal people think of that city, we think of Eyehategod, Crowbar, Phil Anselmo, and Pepper Keenan; again, if their sloppy, “slippery” sound isn’t really your vibe, you may consider skipping the seven-part NOLA and its craggily, hard-lived subjects. But again, a little context can only make you better understand their jam, which is what leads to their jam becoming your jam. Or you may just bristle at each self-referential definition of a nebulous thing like a city and its populace just like you do when hearing about Brooklyn. Only one way to find out!
