Monster Magnet Milking The Stars

It was back in 2011 that Monster Magnet mainman Dave Wyndorf first planted the seed in our minds: In an all-time classic interview, he spoke about someday launching a Monster Magnet unplugged tour, in which MM classics were stretched, psyched, and otherwise weirded out to the eighth dimension. The idea sounded awesome to us, fans as we are of both the freaky-deaky and of re-workings of killer songs. That’s why we love stuff like Katatonia’s Dethroned And Uncrowned, Mr. Bungle’s live redux of “My Ass Is On Fire,” and dub music — we welcome a new telling of a great story.

Now it’s 2014 and Wyndorf’s seed is nearly a mature plant, so to speak: Slated for November 18 release is Milking The Stars, a reworking of last year’s triumphant Last Patrol album. Wyndorf:

‘What if these songs were recorded in 1968?’ ‘What would happen if I turned a pretty song into an angry one?’ ‘How would adding creepy organs and Mellotrons affect the emotional vibe of a song?’ These are just a few of the questions that roll around in my head when I write and record any album but this time I decided to actually answer them with fully fleshed-out, recorded, and mixed examples.

The process created new songs. That’s the icing on the cake for me. New sounds, new vocals, different instruments and arrangements make for a weird 1960’s vibe totally apart from Last PatrolFinally there’s expanded versions of the songs ‘Last Patrol’ and ‘Three Kingfishers’ as recorded live at the AB club in Belgium, 2014. Those songs were re-arranged for ‘maximum rock and psych’ before we hit the road last year … Personally, I think they beat the original versions.

Yesss! Let’s freak out! Check out the tracklist here and new jam “No Paradise For Me” below!
