Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train,” as Performed by The Harp Twins
Last year, Camille and Kennerly Kitt, known as the Harp Twins (actual website slogan: “When One of a Kind Just Isn’t Enough”), released a cover of Iron Maiden’s “Fear of the Dark,” the video for which I classified as “creepy as fuck.” Now they’ve released a cover and video of/for Ozzy’s “Crazy Train,” and somehow, it’s even creepier. For one thing, they still keep looking directly into the camera, which is cinematic shorthand for “disturbing,” as explained by the always-great Film Crit Hulk:
“WHEN A CHARACTER LOOKS DIRECTLY INTO A CAMERA, IT IS… UNNERVING. OFF-PUTTING. CREEPY. EVEN SCARY. AND THAT’S BECAUSE UNLESS WE’RE A STAND-IN FOR A CHARACTER THE PERSON IS TALKING TO (THINK SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) IT IS EFFECTIVELY ‘BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL’ AND THE SOCIAL CONTRACT WITH THE AUDIENCE. IT AUTOMATICALLY MAKES US THE VOYEUR. AND EVEN IF WE ARE THE LITERAL STAND-IN FOR THE CHARACTER P.O.V. SO THAT IT DOESN’T BREAK THE FOURTH WALL, IT SHOULD STILL HAVE THE DIRECT INTENTION OF CREEPING US OUT.”
For another thing, setting the entire thing in and around what appears to be a train stolen from the local Six Flags gives the whole endeavor a vibe that seems more appropriate for “Mr. Tinkertrain” than this song. Shiver.
