Sh*t That Comes Out Today: June 10, 2014
Rock out with your cock out? More like chill out with your cock in. I swear, sometimes it’s so difficult to opine on the tasty selections of each week’s Shit That Comes Out Today — it’s like uh, the insta-hardon environs come into play with these jams. Maybe like that one time in school when your woody-in-a-hoodie tried to say “hello m’lady” to the hot math teacher? Whatever, you guys are sick. Tune in below.

Arch Enemy
War Eternal (Century Media)
On a playlist with: The Agonist, Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquility
Listen “War Eternal” (here) “As The Pages Burn” (here) “You Will Know My Name” (here)
It’s both good and bad that you can expect the same from Arch Enemy. The good: The band’s kickass ethos carries on through lineup changes and other drama. The bad: Where’s something fresher? War Eternal is a sexfest for any die-hard Arch Enemy fan — it might as well be full of bonus tracks from previous albums. But “War Eternal” didn’t make me excited to hear the rest of the all-new Arch Enemy record. The record as a whole still rips, but it doesn’t put the fizz in my pants that Anthems Of Rebellion and Doomsday Machine did.

Hashed Out
Hashed Out EP (L’Oeil Du Tigre)
On a playlist with: Converge, Trap Them, Birds In Row
Listen Hashed Out EP full stream (here)
If you’re craving hardcore via lengthier songs and tonal/structure variation, let me just say welcome to Hashed Out! The page linked above is in French, so here’s a fitting translation courtesy of Google for your jam-knowledge: “Between the branches of the metropolitan jungle, there is a growling monster without fear. It is so bitter that it makes you dizzy. Mythological giants can get dressed, Hashed Out is a real trojan on the international scene hardcore punk.” Oui!

In Hearts Wake
Earthwalker (UNFD)
On a playlist with: Heartist, The Amity Affliction, Confession
Listen Earthwalker full stream (here)
Last week I wrote that not all deathcore is total shite. At the core of that reasoning: Even though a band has the sensibilities of its boring genre, it can innovate and overcome them without going post! Earthwalker does just that. Yes, you get some semi-lame clean singing interludes and generi-core breakdowns. But the important thing is that the “meh” bits are well-integrated between Fallujah-quality, post-processed verses, intros, and outros. Each song is bespoke, unique, and feels damn good!

Hellyeah
Blood For Blood (Eleven Seven)
On a playlist with: Hellnah
Listen “Sange Por Sangre” (here) Blood For Blood lol full stream (here)
There are people out there who like Hellyeah, right? A band like this might have a “type” of listener out there — maybe radio-rock fans, maybe alternative fans — somebody who digs their moves. But I don’t think Hellyeah could be appreciated by non-metal listeners, which is bad news for Hellyeah because, uh, well just watch the “Sangre Por Sangre” music video and find out. Too bad, cause as we all know, Vinnie Paul is a bomb-ass drummer.
·
Body Count
Manslaughter (Sumerian)
On a playlist with: Rage Against The Machine
Listen “Talk Shit, Get Shot” (here) “Bitch In The Pit” (here)
So, yeah, it’s a real thing: Body Count (featuring, of course, Ice-T) is signed to Sumerian. Also if you didn’t catch Ice-T on yesterday’s MetalSucks podcast, get a load of it here. Interesting things to note: this is Body Count’s first album since 2006. Also, I don’t think we see a lot of rap-infused metal (or metal-infused rap) in these here parts. I like the freshness.
·
Mars Red Sky
Stranded In Arcadia (Listenable)
On a playlist with: Sungrazer, Comet Control, Asteroid
Listen “The Light Beyond” (here) “Arcadia” (here) “Hovering Satellites” (here)
Hard rock can be neither here nor there, but every so often a band with giant fucking balls drops a motherload. Stranded In Arcadia has all the groovy, bubbly riffs + atmospheric/sexy vocals to fulfill any drunk bar-rocker’s needs. But the fact that there’s cohesive depth, push, and True Emotion to the package (oh yeah, that fuzz tone too) — that’s what makes it metal. Stranded is this week’s golden shit.
