“99 Problems BC”: Body Count Have a Lot of B*tches
I wonder if most people even realize that Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” was partially inspired by an Ice-T song of the same name? The Jay-Z anthem was obviously a massive hit, but I don’t remember Home Invasion, the album on which Ice-T’s original appeared getting much press for anything other than its provocative cover art. And, honestly, the Jay-Z version is a lot better, which is largely due to the guitar part added by producer Rick Rubin.
So this is example of pop-culture-recycling isn’t entirely surprising: Body Count, a.k.a. “Ice-T’s metal band,” have utilized the Jay-Z guitar line for a re-recording of T’s (Ice’s? Mr. Ice? You can’t call him “Mr. T”…) original. I don’t like it as much as the band’s last single, “Talk Shit, Get Shot,” mostly because no one is threatening to shoot me if I say anything negative about it. Body Count’s new album, Manslaughter, comes out June 10 on Sumerian Records.
