Everyone's Replaceable

Stone Sour are now Jim Root-less

Jim Root

Just the other day I was talking with someone about Stone Sour. Specifically that their music hadn’t ever really done much for us, but they really nailed it on this most recent double-album.

Unfortunately now it seems as if Stone Sour are down one member who helped write it.

Loudwire captured an exchange on Root’s Instagram in which he responded to a fan’s question about his status in the band. Root missed a tour earlier this year to focus on writing new Slipknot material.

jimrootinstagramOnce the above began to circulate, Stone Sour released an official statement to clear things up:

As some of you might have heard by now, Stone Sour and Jim Root have indeed parted ways. We were trying to wait until the completion of the new SK album, but in light of recent events, we are going to confirm this information and move on. We feel it’s best for both bands and hope that is reflected in the days to come. We will give you more information when the time comes.

Reading between the lines here, it seems as if Stone Sour wanted someone who can commit full-time to the band, or can at least offer them as much time as Corey Taylor, who is also in both bands but still finds a way to make it work. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other issues at play here, such as Root wanting time off the road to spend at home / with his family; it can’t be easy being in two popular nationally touring bands, and I don’t blame him. It’s gotta be kinda awkward for Root and Taylor to continue working together so closely in Slipknot, but this Tweet from Taylor indicates they’re being grown-ups about it.

I’m not a big enough Stone Sour fan to know how vital of a role Root played in their songwriting, but the sense I get is that Josh Rand is the main creative force. They’ll probably be fine.
