So Many Drums! All-Drum Band Feature Melvins, Big Business, Modest Mouse Drummers
What happens when Dale Crover (Melvins, Shrinebuilder, briefly Nirvana), Coady Willis (Big Business), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse) team up to form a new band?
Hew Time, an all-drum outfit that’s just released a song called “Nine Pan Alley” that you can listen to below.
An all-drum outfit runs the risk of being completely boring, or, worse, a total wankfest. But this Hew Time song is anything but: one of these three guys is tapping on a set of cowbells or marimbas or something (please pardon my ignorance, I’m not a drummer) to produce a discernible melody that carries the tune throughout. The rhythms and other percussive effects are pretty cool to listen to also. I don’t know if I could jam an entire album of this, but at least as a one-off this song is a fun listening exercise.
Hew Time’s self-titled album comes out on March 25 via Joyful Noise Recordings. Order here.
