Miss Fortune’s “Chasing Dreams” Video Seems Familiar
Anyone who watched MTV on a regular basis in 1992 should immediately feel a sense of déjà vu upon watching Miss Fortune’s new video for the song “Chasing Dreams.” This is not because Miss Fortune are some older band now enjoying a reunion (the band’s members were just being born around 1992). Rather, it’s because it’s nearly identical to the Kevin Kerslake-directed video for Nirvana’s “In Bloom” was MTV played approximately once every fifteen minutes upon its initial release.
Both videos are parodies of performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, complete with actual footage of screaming teenage girls taken from the program, both videos have the band wearing an era-approriate wardrobe, and Miss Fortune vocalist Mikey Sawyer’s physical similarities to Kurt Cobain are only enhanced by giving him his own set of black, thick-rimmed nerd glasses.
I don’t know if the Miss Fortune clip is intended as an homage to the Nirvana video or everyone involved was just hoping that a sufficient amount of time has passed that nobody would notice, but I do know this: somewhere, Kurt Cobain is weeping.
