The First New Psyopus Track in Five Years! (Sorta)
Psyopus’s most recent album Odd Senses came out just a shade over five years ago, but honestly it seems like it’s been even longer: the band hasn’t toured much or really done anything at all for a good chunk of that time. Once every few months the MetalSucks Mansion Monkeys bring us an email from a reader asking if we know what the band’s been up to, but we’ve always got to send him back to his cage with his tail between his legs because, quite simply, we just don’t know. No one does.
Until now! But only sorta, for three reasons:
1) The band has released a “new” song, but hasn’t revealed anything about their whereabouts or future plans.
2) “New” is in quotes because the song is actually a cover of The Grateful Dead’s “Grey Skies,” not an original piece. Explains Headbang N’ Buttonmash, who premiered the track: “Originally recorded in July 2006, the Psyopus rendition of The Grateful Dead‘s classic (and only) hit “Touch of Grey” has now been unearthed. If you followed Psyopus at all they are known for balancing their hyper technical opuses with humorous bonus tracks and funny cover songs. For some reason “Touch of Grey” didn’t make the cut. The end result was a twisted cover of The Red Chord‘s “Catalepsy” instead.”
3) This track was previously available on Psyopus’s MySpace page for one night only about eight years ago, so a few superfans already have it and are presently rolling their eyes that we’re presented this as “new.”
In any case, check it out below. It’s a straight cover most of the way through with some typical Psyopus silliness, but then things take a sudden turn at the end.
